goldenyearsbowie

some thoughts on the Golden Years of Bowie (for me, 1975-1980) though, barring the 80's , the inner & outer years are equally up for grabs. With links (look hard for them) to rare audio & footage too. Hope you enjoy.

Station to Station: Travels with Bowie 1973-76

Childhood Bowie Friend Geoff MacCormack otherwise known as Warren Peace has released a coffee table book of photographs taken during his time with David Bowie. It's a little pricey but no doubt contains some previously unseen photos together with some personal recollections.
The book is available direct from Genesis publications.

STATIONTOSTATION (ChristianeF)

Although the soundtrack is from the Stage tour of 1978, the visuals were done circa 1980 for the harrowing German film about one girl's decent into drugs: ChristianeF.
So Mr B gets to mime a live track and one that was heavily mixed and sometimes overdubbed by Tony Visconti in the name of re inserting certain instrument that failed to make it to the live master due to technical problems etc.

Peace on Earth...

That may be a lost cause but Xmas is another excuse to dredge up the most bizarre coupling in contemporary Music history. Filmed in London in December 1977, the Bowie and Bing Xmas TV thingie has been a staple of many subsequent Xmas's. I don't remember any reshowing of the entire programme but Little Drummer boy is its enduring legacy. Bing had no idea who Bowie was but declared that bowie could be a "good actor". Hmmm.

CONVERSATIONS WITH BOWIE PART 2

NEW YEARS EVE 1979

On New Years eve 1979, Bowie appeared on Kenny Everetts New Years Eve programme with a video that would preface the Ashes to Ashes video some months later and that would contain some of the basic ideas that would be fleshed out for Ashes to Ashes. This acoustic version of Space oddity was not intended for release but due to a capital Radio DJ playing the tape on air and subsequent pirate distribution, the song did makes its way onto official single releases though this video has seldom been seen officially.

CONVERSATIONS WITH BOWIE

I've been getting around to archiving my many old, old (ok, OLD) cassette tapes which contain a few Bowie gems amongst others. Here's the first part of "conversations with Bowie", a programme that aired on capital radio , 14th of May 1979, I believe. Competition winners got to meet Bowie and put questions to him directly.

The Man Who Fell To Earth via satellite

An oft cosumented interview that Bowie undertook is that in 1975 between Bowie & UK chat show host Rusell Harty via the infancy of satellite. I've never seen the full footage but a small, poor quality sample has tuned up online.

The full transcript is here.

GOLDEN YEARS

If you would care to click on the "GOLDEN YEARS" title above, I can recommend a very well researched & presented website detailing the who, when & where's of Bowie's own golden years.
